MOS Access: Queries, Forms and Reports

Question 1

Which query criteria returns all customers whose last name begins with the letter S?

Accepted Answer

Like "S*"

Answer

Like "S*" uses the * wildcard to match any text starting with S. Like "*S" would match text that ends with S.

Question 2

You want a query to show a column that multiplies Quantity by UnitPrice. What do you add?

Accepted Answer

A calculated field such as Total: [Quantity]*[UnitPrice]

Answer

A calculated field in the query grid uses the pattern FieldName: expression. Here Total: [Quantity]*[UnitPrice] computes the value for each row.

Question 3

How do you build a query that asks the user to type a value each time it runs?

Accepted Answer

Put a prompt in square brackets in the Criteria row, such as [Enter City]

Answer

Text in square brackets in the criteria row that doesn't match a field name acts as a parameter prompt, and Access asks for the value on running the query.

Question 4

Which command on the Create tab quickly builds a form based on the currently selected table or query?

Accepted Answer

Form

Answer

Create > Form generates a form from the selected record source with all its fields in one click. Form Wizard offers more choices.

Question 5

In a report, which feature lets you organize records by category and show a subtotal for each one?

Accepted Answer

Grouping and Sorting with a total in the group footer

Answer

Group, Sort and Total in Layout or Design view lets you group by a field and add summaries such as sums in the group footer.
