  1. What are the four types of mesothelioma based on location?

Answer: Pleural (lungs), peritoneal (abdomen), pericardial (heart), and testicular

Mesothelioma is classified by the body cavity where it develops: pleural (70-80% of cases, lung lining), peritoneal (20-25%, abdominal lining), pericardial (1-2%, heart lining), and testicular (<1%).

  2. What are the three cell types of mesothelioma?

Answer: Epithelioid, sarcomatoid, and biphasic (mixed)

Mesothelioma cells are classified as epithelioid (most common, best prognosis), sarcomatoid (most aggressive, worst prognosis), or biphasic (mix of both, intermediate prognosis).

  3. What is peritoneal mesothelioma?

Answer: Cancer of the abdominal lining caused by asbestos exposure, treated with HIPEC surgery when possible

Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdominal lining and may be treated with cytoreductive surgery combined with HIPEC (heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy), with better survival rates than pleural mesothelioma.

  4. What makes epithelioid mesothelioma different from sarcomatoid?

Answer: Epithelioid cells grow slower and respond better to treatment; sarcomatoid cells are aggressive and resistant to therapy

Epithelioid cells are uniform and slow-growing, responding better to chemotherapy and surgery. Sarcomatoid cells are elongated, aggressive, and more resistant to treatment.

  5. What is HIPEC treatment for peritoneal mesothelioma?

Answer: Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy — heated chemo solution circulated in the abdomen during surgery

HIPEC involves surgically removing visible tumors (cytoreductive surgery) then circulating heated chemotherapy solution throughout the abdominal cavity to kill remaining microscopic cancer cells.

  6. What clinical trials are available for mesothelioma patients?

Answer: Trials testing immunotherapy, gene therapy, targeted therapy, and combination treatments

Active mesothelioma clinical trials investigate immunotherapy combinations, targeted molecular therapies, gene therapy, photodynamic therapy, and novel drug combinations.
