Sample Math Practice Questions

Try these questions from our free Math practice tests. The correct answer and an explanation follow each question.

  1. A runner completes a race in t minutes. A second runner finishes 8 minutes faster. Which expression gives the second runner's time?

    • A. t - 8
    • B. t + 8
    • C. 8t
    • D. t/8

    Answer: A. t - 8

'Faster' means less time, so the second runner's time is t - 8.

  2. Which measure of central tendency is most affected by an extreme outlier?

    • A. Mean
    • B. Median
    • C. Mode
    • D. Range

    Answer: A. Mean

The mean is calculated using all values, so a very large or small outlier shifts it significantly.

  3. Which number is a perfect square?

    • A. 50
    • B. 72
    • C. 81
    • D. 90

    Answer: C. 81

81 = 9ยฒ, so it is a perfect square; the others have no integer square roots.

  4. Which sampling method divides the population into groups and randomly selects entire groups?

    • A. Stratified sampling
    • B. Systematic sampling
    • C. Cluster sampling
    • D. Simple random sampling

    Answer: C. Cluster sampling

Cluster sampling divides the population into groups (clusters) and randomly selects entire clusters to survey.

๐Ÿ”ข ๐Ÿ”ข What is the order of operations in math (PEMDAS)?
Work Parentheses first, then Exponents, then Multiplication and Division from left to right, then Addition and Subtraction from left to right. For example, 8 โˆ’ 2 ร— 3 = 8 โˆ’ 6 = 2, not 18.
๐Ÿ“ ๐Ÿ“ What do the angles in a triangle add up to?
The interior angles of any triangle always add up to 180ยฐ. A quadrilateral's angles total 360ยฐ, and any polygon with n sides has an angle sum of (n โˆ’ 2) ร— 180ยฐ.
๐Ÿ’ฏ ๐Ÿ’ฏ How do you work out a percentage of a number?
Turn the percentage into a decimal and multiply. For example, 15% of 80 = 0.15 ร— 80 = 12. A quick check: 10% of 80 is 8 and 5% is 4, so 15% is 8 + 4 = 12.
โž— โž— How do you divide fractions?
Keep the first fraction, flip the second (use its reciprocal) and multiply. For example, 3/4 รท 1/2 = 3/4 ร— 2/1 = 6/4, which simplifies to 3/2 or 1.5.
โญ• โญ• What is the formula for the area of a circle?
Area = ฯ€rยฒ, where r is the radius. A circle with radius 5 cm has an area of 25ฯ€ โ‰ˆ 78.54 cmยฒ. Its circumference is 2ฯ€r โ‰ˆ 31.42 cm.
๐Ÿ“ ๐Ÿ“ What is the Pythagorean theorem?
In a right triangle, aยฒ + bยฒ = cยฒ, where c is the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle). With legs 3 and 4, the hypotenuse is โˆš(9 + 16) = โˆš25 = 5.
๐Ÿ”Ÿ ๐Ÿ”Ÿ What is a prime number, and is 1 prime?
A prime number has exactly two different positive factors: 1 and itself. The number 1 is not prime because it has only one factor, and 2 is the only even prime. The primes below 20 are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17 and 19.
๐Ÿ“Š ๐Ÿ“Š What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count, the median is the middle value in order, and the mode is the most frequent value. For 2, 3, 3, 6, 11 the mean is 25 รท 5 = 5, while the median and mode are both 3.
โœ–๏ธ โœ–๏ธ What is the trick for the 9 times table?
For 9 ร— 1 up to 9 ร— 10, the digits of the answer always add up to 9, and the tens digit is one less than the number you multiply by. So 9 ร— 7 = 63: the tens digit is 6 and 6 + 3 = 9.
๐Ÿ“ˆ ๐Ÿ“ˆ How do you find the slope of a line from two points?
Slope m = (yโ‚‚ โˆ’ yโ‚) รท (xโ‚‚ โˆ’ xโ‚), the change in y over the change in x. Through (1, 2) and (3, 8), m = (8 โˆ’ 2) รท (3 โˆ’ 1) = 6 รท 2 = 3, so y rises 3 for every 1 step in x.

Maths Questions and Answers: FAQ

What is the order of operations in math?

The order of operations tells you which part of a calculation to do first: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (left to right), then Addition and Subtraction (left to right), often remembered as PEMDAS or BODMAS. For example, 6 + 4 ร— 2 equals 6 + 8 = 14, not 20, because multiplication comes before addition. Division and multiplication have equal rank, so 12 รท 3 ร— 2 = 4 ร— 2 = 8.

How do you calculate a percentage without a calculator?

Start from 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then build the percentage you need. For 15% of 240, 10% is 24 and 5% is half of that, 12, so 15% is 24 + 12 = 36. For 1%, move the decimal two places: 1% of 240 is 2.4. Percentages also reverse, so 8% of 50 equals 50% of 8, which is 4.

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the average: add every value and divide by how many values there are. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted, and the mode is the value that appears most often. For the data set 2, 3, 3, 6, 11 the mean is 25 รท 5 = 5, the median is 3 and the mode is 3. Outliers such as 11 pull the mean more than the median.

Is 1 a prime number?

No. A prime number must have exactly two different positive factors, 1 and itself, and the number 1 has only one factor. Mathematicians exclude 1 so that every whole number greater than 1 has a single, unique prime factorization, such as 12 = 2 ร— 2 ร— 3. The smallest prime is 2, which is also the only even prime; every other even number is divisible by 2.

How do you find the area and circumference of a circle?

Use the radius r, the distance from the center to the edge. Area is ฯ€rยฒ and circumference is 2ฯ€r, or ฯ€d if you know the diameter. For a circle with radius 4 cm, the area is 16ฯ€ โ‰ˆ 50.27 cmยฒ and the circumference is 8ฯ€ โ‰ˆ 25.13 cm. Remember that area is in square units, while circumference is a length.

How do you add fractions with different denominators?

Rewrite both fractions over a common denominator, ideally the least common multiple, then add the numerators and keep the denominator. For 1/4 + 1/6, the least common denominator is 12, so 1/4 = 3/12 and 1/6 = 2/12, giving 5/12. Simplify at the end if the numerator and denominator share a factor, for example 6/8 becomes 3/4.

How can I get better at mental maths?

Practise short, frequent sets of questions and learn number facts by heart, especially the times tables up to 12 ร— 12. Break awkward sums into friendly parts: 47 + 38 is 47 + 40 โˆ’ 2 = 85, and 25 ร— 16 is 100 ร— 4 = 400. Checking your answer by estimating first, such as 50 + 40 โ‰ˆ 90, quickly catches mistakes on timed quizzes.
