  1. What is motivational interviewing (MI)?

Answer: A client-centered counseling approach that helps clients explore and resolve ambivalence about behavior change

MI uses empathy, reflective listening, and strategic questioning to help clients identify their own motivations for change, rather than trying to convince them through direct persuasion or confrontation.

  2. What is the biopsychosocial model in clinical psychology?

Answer: An integrative framework considering biological, psychological, and social factors in understanding health and illness

The biopsychosocial model recognizes that mental health conditions result from the interplay of biological factors (genetics, neurochemistry), psychological factors (thoughts, emotions, coping), and social factors (relationships, culture, environment).

  3. What is the duty to warn in psychology?

Answer: The legal and ethical obligation to notify identified potential victims when a client makes credible threats of violence

Established by the Tarasoff decision (1976), the duty to warn/protect requires psychologists to take reasonable steps to protect identifiable potential victims when a client poses a serious threat of harm.

  4. What is evidence-based practice in psychology?

Answer: Integrating the best available research evidence with clinical expertise and client characteristics to guide treatment decisions

Evidence-based practice combines three elements: the best available research evidence, the clinician's professional expertise and judgment, and the individual client's characteristics, preferences, and cultural context.

  5. What is a treatment plan in clinical psychology?

Answer: A documented plan outlining treatment goals, interventions, timeline, and criteria for measuring progress

Treatment plans establish measurable goals, specify evidence-based interventions, set timelines for review, and define criteria for evaluating progress, providing structure and accountability for the therapeutic process.

  6. What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Answer: Psychologists have doctoral degrees in psychology and provide therapy/assessment; psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication

Psychologists hold PhD or PsyD degrees and specialize in psychological testing and psychotherapy. Psychiatrists hold MD degrees, can prescribe medications, and may also provide therapy. Both diagnose mental health conditions.
