The IPTPA L1 (International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association Level 1) is the entry-level professional instructor credential for pickleball teaching. Earning this certification proves you understand court dimensions, rules, stroke mechanics, beginner teaching methodology, and professional conduct โ everything needed to safely introduce new players to the fastest-growing sport in America.
Our free printable PDF contains exam-style questions across every L1 domain. Print it out, work through the questions away from the screen, then check your answers and return to the online IPTPA L1 practice test for timed simulation.
Candidates must know the court dimensions (20x44 feet), net height (36 inches at the sidelines, 34 inches at the center), and all non-volley zone rules. The kitchen โ the 7-foot zone on each side of the net โ generates many test questions because foot faults and volley restrictions are the most common rule violations beginners commit.
The exam tests paddle materials (graphite, fiberglass, composite), their performance characteristics, indoor versus outdoor ball differences, and how to determine correct grip sizing for a student. Recommending appropriate equipment is part of the instructor role from day one.
You must understand the purpose and technique of every core shot: the dink (soft shot landing in the non-volley zone to create an unattackable ball), the third shot drop (transitioning from the baseline toward the kitchen), forehand and backhand drives, the lob, the overhead smash, and the serve. The serve must be underhand, contact must be made below the waist, and the ball must land in the diagonal service box.
Know both rally scoring and traditional side-out scoring systems. Fault types, let serves, line call procedures, carry and double-hit rulings, and service sequence rules are all tested. The L1 exam expects a thorough working knowledge of the official USA Pickleball rulebook as it applies to beginner instruction.
The exam covers how to structure a beginner group lesson from court safety briefing through to supervised game play, how to communicate with adult learners using age-appropriate progressions, and how to use demonstration and guided practice effectively. Questions also address stacking and NVZ positioning as introductory strategies for beginning players.
IPTPA expects instructors to model professional behavior on and off the court. Questions address instructor responsibilities around court safety, managing diverse skill levels in a group setting, and how to handle disputes or injuries during a lesson.
Offline PDF practice is great for drilling definitions and rules, but the timed online environment is where you build true exam readiness. Use the IPTPA L1 practice test to answer questions under realistic time pressure, read detailed answer explanations, and zero in on any knowledge gaps before your certification day.
