  1. Which number is exactly halfway between −8 and 14?

    Answer: 3

    The midpoint is (−8 + 14) ÷ 2 = 3.

  2. A shop reduces the price of a $60 jacket by 25%, then adds 10% back on. What is the final price?

    Answer: $49.50

    25% off gives $45, and 10% of $45 added back gives $49.50.

  3. What is the value of 2³ × 5 − 3²?

    Answer: 31

    2³ = 8, 8 × 5 = 40, and 40 − 9 = 31.

  4. Tom is x years old. His sister is twice his age and his father is 30 years older than his sister. Which expression gives the father's age?

    Answer: 2x + 30

    The sister is 2x, and the father is 2x + 30.

  5. A machine takes an input number, multiplies it by 3 and then subtracts 4. If the output is 23, what was the input?

    Answer: 9

    Reversing: 23 + 4 = 27, and 27 ÷ 3 = 9.

  6. A bag has red and blue marbles in the ratio 3 : 5. If there are 40 marbles in total, how many are red?

    Answer: 15

    3 + 5 = 8 parts, each part is 5 marbles, so red = 3 × 5 = 15.
