  1. A store marks up a $50 item by 30%. What is the selling price?

    Answer: $65

    Markup = 30% × $50 = $15, so selling price = $50 + $15 = $65.

  2. Which of the following is a solution to 2x + 3 = 11?

    Answer: x = 4

    2(4) + 3 = 8 + 3 = 11, so x = 4 is the solution.

  3. A map uses a scale of 1 cm : 50 km. If two cities are 6 cm apart on the map, what is the actual distance?

    Answer: 300 km

    Actual distance = 6 × 50 = 300 km.

  4. What is the mode of the data set: 4, 7, 4, 9, 7, 4, 3?

    Answer: 4

The value 4 appears 3 times, more than any other value, so it is the mode.

  5. Two angles are supplementary. One angle measures 112°. What is the measure of the other?

    Answer: 68°

    Supplementary angles sum to 180°, so the other angle = 180 − 112 = 68°.

  6. What is the value of the expression: 5 + 3 × 2² − 4 ÷ 2?

    Answer: 15

    Using order of operations: 3 × 4 = 12, 4 ÷ 2 = 2, then 5 + 12 − 2 = 15.

  7. A right-angled triangle has legs of 6 cm and 8 cm. What is the length of the hypotenuse?

    Answer: 10 cm

    By the Pythagorean theorem: √(6² + 8²) = √(36 + 64) = √100 = 10 cm.
