Factor: x² - 5x - 14
Answer: (x - 7)(x + 2)
Find numbers that multiply to -14 and add to -5: -7 and 2. So (x-7)(x+2).
What is the degree of the polynomial 4x³ - 2x⁵ + 7x - 9?
Answer: 5
The degree is the highest exponent: the term -2x⁵ has exponent 5, so the degree is 5.
Expand: (x + 5)²
Answer: x² + 10x + 25
(x + 5)² = x² + 2(5)x + 5² = x² + 10x + 25.
Factor by grouping: 2x³ + 4x² + 3x + 6
Answer: (2x² + 3)(x + 2)
Group: (2x³ + 4x²) + (3x + 6) = 2x²(x + 2) + 3(x + 2) = (2x² + 3)(x + 2).
Divide the polynomial: (x² + 5x + 6) ÷ (x + 2)
Answer: x + 3
Factor numerator: (x+2)(x+3). Dividing by (x+2) gives (x+3).
Which of the following is a factor of x² - x - 6?
Answer: (x - 3)
x² - x - 6 = (x - 3)(x + 2). So (x - 3) is a factor.
