  1. An inclined plane is 10 feet long and 2 feet high. What is the mechanical advantage?

    Answer: 5

    MA = length of incline ÷ height = 10 ÷ 2 = 5.

  2. If a machine has an input force of 80N and an output force of 240N, what is its actual mechanical advantage?

    Answer: 3

    AMA = output force ÷ input force = 240 ÷ 80 = 3.

  3. Two gears mesh together. Gear A has 15 teeth and Gear B has 45 teeth. If Gear A is the driver, which statement is true?

    Answer: Gear B rotates slower than Gear A

    Gear B has 3× more teeth, so it rotates 3× slower (speed ratio = 15/45 = 1/3).

  4. A compound pulley uses 5 rope segments to support a 500-lb load. How much effort force is needed (ignoring friction)?

    Answer: 100 lbs

    Effort = Load ÷ MA = 500 ÷ 5 = 100 lbs.

  5. Which simple machine does a screwdriver handle represent?

    Answer: Wheel and axle

    A screwdriver is a wheel and axle — the handle is the wheel (large radius) and the shaft is the axle (small radius).

  6. If you need to reduce the speed of a shaft by 4 times using gears, and the driver gear has 10 teeth, how many teeth should the driven gear have?

    Answer: 40

    To reduce speed by 4, driven gear needs 4× more teeth than driver: 10 × 4 = 40 teeth.
