  1. What happens to the speed of a conveyor belt if the drive pulley diameter is doubled while the motor speed stays constant?

    Answer: Belt speed doubles

Belt speed = pulley circumference × RPM. Doubling diameter doubles circumference, doubling belt speed.

  2. A movable pulley system uses 3 sections of rope to support a load. The load weighs 450 lbs. What is the effort force required?

    Answer: 150 lbs

    Mechanical advantage = 3 (rope sections). Effort = 450 ÷ 3 = 150 lbs.

  3. Which of the following is true about a third-class lever?

Answer: The effort is between the fulcrum and load

In a third-class lever, the effort is applied between the fulcrum and the load (e.g., tweezers, fishing rod).

  4. Two meshed gears have a speed ratio of 3:1. If the smaller (faster) gear has 15 teeth, how many teeth does the larger gear have?

    Answer: 45 teeth

Speed ratio 3:1 means the small gear spins 3 times for every 1 revolution of the large gear. Tooth ratio is inverse: 1:3. Larger gear teeth = 15 × 3 = 45.

  5. A hydraulic jack uses a small piston with 2 sq in area and a large piston with 20 sq in area. If 50 lbs of force is applied to the small piston, what force does the large piston exert?

    Answer: 500 lbs

    Hydraulic MA = large area / small area = 20/2 = 10. Output force = 50 × 10 = 500 lbs.

  6. What does 'mechanical advantage' measure?

Answer: The ratio of output force to input force

Mechanical advantage (MA) = output force / input force. MA > 1 means the machine multiplies force.
