  1. A crew of 4 electricians can wire 6 apartments in 3 days. Working at the same rate, how many days will it take a crew of 3 electricians to wire the same 6 apartments?

    Answer: 4 days

    The total work is 4 electricians × 3 days = 12 man-days. Dividing by the new crew size: 12 ÷ 3 = 4 days.

  2. An electrician cuts three pieces of wire from a spool measuring 5¾ ft, 8½ ft, and 3¼ ft. What is the total length of wire cut?

    Answer: 17½ ft

    Convert to quarters: 5¾ = 23/4, 8½ = 34/4, 3¼ = 13/4. Sum = 70/4 = 17½ ft.

  3. Wire costs $0.85 per foot. A job requires 3 spools of wire, each containing 250 feet. What is the total material cost?

    Answer: $637.50

    Total feet = 3 × 250 = 750 ft. Cost = 750 × $0.85 = $637.50.

  4. An apprentice earns $28.50 per hour and works 8 hours on Monday, 6.5 hours on Tuesday, and 7 hours on Wednesday. What are his total earnings for the three days?

    Answer: $612.75

    Total hours = 8 + 6.5 + 7 = 21.5 hours. Earnings = 21.5 × $28.50 = $612.75.

  5. A conduit run requires 47 feet of pipe. The pipe comes in 10-foot sections. How many full sections must be purchased to complete the run?

    Answer: 5

47 ÷ 10 = 4.7, meaning 4 full sections are not enough. You must purchase 5 sections to have sufficient pipe.

  6. On a job site, 1 out of every 8 workers is a foreman. If there are 96 workers on the site, how many are foremen?

    Answer: 12

    96 ÷ 8 = 12. One-eighth of 96 workers are foremen.
