  1. A store marks up items by 40%. If an item costs $25 wholesale, what is the retail price?

    Answer: $35

    40% of $25 = $10 markup. Retail price = $25 + $10 = $35. Alternatively, $25 × 1.40 = $35.

  2. What is the median of the set {3, 7, 9, 12, 15}?

    Answer: 9

The median is the middle value when numbers are arranged in order. In this set of 5 numbers, the third number (9) is the median.

  3. If a triangle has angles of 45° and 90°, what is the third angle?

    Answer: 45°

    The sum of angles in a triangle is 180°. So the third angle = 180° - 45° - 90° = 45°. This is a 45-45-90 right triangle.

  4. What is the greatest common factor of 24 and 36?

    Answer: 12

Factors of 24: 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,24. Factors of 36: 1,2,3,4,6,9,12,18,36. The greatest common factor is 12.

  5. A car travels 180 miles in 3 hours. What is its average speed?

    Answer: 60 mph

    Average speed = distance ÷ time = 180 miles ÷ 3 hours = 60 miles per hour.

  6. What number is 3/4 of 2/3 of 120?

    Answer: 60

    First find 2/3 of 120 = 80. Then find 3/4 of 80 = 60. Alternatively, (3/4) × (2/3) × 120 = (6/12) × 120 = 60.
