  1. If 5 machines produce 600 units in 3 hours, how many units do 8 machines produce in 3 hours?

    Answer: 960

    Each machine makes 120 units in 3 hours, so 8 x 120 = 960.

  2. The ratio 0.4:0.6 simplified to lowest whole-number terms is:

    Answer: 2:3

Multiply both by 10 to get 4:6, which reduces to 2:3.

  3. If a/b = b/c and a = 4, c = 9, what is b (positive value)?

    Answer: 6

    b^2 = ac = 36, so b = 6 (the geometric mean).

  4. A team's win-to-loss ratio is 7:2. If they played 36 games with no ties, how many did they win?

    Answer: 28

    Total parts = 9, each = 4, wins = 7 x 4 = 28.

  5. If the ratio of length to width of a rectangle is 5:3 and the perimeter is 64, what is the length?

    Answer: 20

    L+W = 32, parts = 8, each = 4, length = 5 x 4 = 20.

  6. A solution is 30% salt. To keep the same ratio, how much salt is in 250 mL?

    Answer: 75 mL

    30% of 250 = 0.30 x 250 = 75 mL.

  7. If x:y = 9:4, what is the ratio of x^2 to y^2?

    Answer: 81:16

    Squaring both terms gives 81:16.
