A sum of $480 is divided in ratio 3:5. What is the smaller share?
Answer: $180
Total parts = 8, each = 60, smaller share = 3 x 60 = $180.
If 8 pens cost $20, how much do 14 pens cost at the same rate?
Answer: $35
Each pen = $2.50, so 14 x 2.50 = $35.
The ratio of boys to girls is 4:5. If there are 12 more girls than boys, how many boys are there?
Answer: 48
Difference = 1 part = 12, so boys = 4 x 12 = 48.
If z is inversely proportional to x and z = 6 when x = 4, what is z when x = 8?
Answer: 3
Product zx = 24 stays constant, so z = 24/8 = 3.
A 60-liter mixture has acid and water in ratio 2:3. How much acid is present?
Answer: 24 liters
Total parts = 5, each = 12, acid = 2 x 12 = 24 liters.
If a:b = 7:3, and b is increased by 6 to make a:b = 7:5, what was the original value of a?
Answer: 21
b goes from 3k to 5k as +6, so 2k=6, k=3, and a = 7 x 3 = 21.
Three friends invest in ratio 4:5:6. If the total profit is $1,500, what does the second friend get?
Answer: $500
Total parts = 15, each = 100, second = 5 x 100 = $500.
