  1. If 4 is added to twice a number the result is 18, what is the number?

    Answer: 7

    2x + 4 = 18 gives x = 7.

  2. What is the slope of the line through (1, 2) and (4, 11)?

    Answer: 3

    (11−2)/(4−1) = 9/3 = 3.

  3. A recipe needs 2 cups of flour for 12 cookies. How much flour for 30 cookies?

    Answer: 5 cups

    2 cups ÷ 12 × 30 = 5 cups.

  4. If a die is rolled once, what is the probability of an even number?

    Answer: 1/2

    Three even faces (2,4,6) out of six gives 1/2.

  5. What is 0.25 expressed as a fraction in lowest terms?

    Answer: 1/4

    0.25 = 25/100 = 1/4.

  6. The perimeter of a square is 36. What is its area?

    Answer: 81

    Side = 36/4 = 9, so area = 9² = 81.

  7. If x + y = 10 and x − y = 4, what is x?

    Answer: 7

    Adding the equations gives 2x = 14, so x = 7.
