GED Online Texas 2026 — Study, Prep, and Get Your Diploma

GED in Texas Overview

In Texas, the high school equivalency credential is the official GED diploma, administered through the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in partnership with GED Testing Service. Texas residents who did not complete high school can earn an accredited high school equivalency certificate by passing all four GED subject tests: Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA), Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies.

The GED is recognized by virtually all Texas employers, Texas colleges and universities, the US military, and professional licensing boards. Passing the GED with a score of 165+ (College Ready) can also help you skip remedial coursework at Texas community colleges. For free practice resources aligned to the GED format, see our ged ready practice test question bank.

Online GED Study Options for Texas

Studying for the GED online is the most popular approach for Texas adults who need flexibility around work and family schedules. Here are the main online study options available to Texas residents:

GED.com (Official): The official GED Testing Service website offers free study materials for every subject, including video lessons, practice questions, and the GED Ready practice test ($6 per subject). The GED Ready gives you a 'Likely to Pass' or 'Not Likely to Pass' prediction — GED Testing Service recommends passing GED Ready before scheduling your official test. Access at ged.com after creating a free myGED account.

Khan Academy (Free): Khan Academy's math, science, reading, and social studies content aligns closely with the GED curriculum. It is completely free and widely used by GED students in Texas. It does not simulate GED questions exactly, but the content coverage is strong.

TEA Adult Education and Literacy (AEL): The Texas Education Agency funds Adult Education and Literacy programs across the state. Many AEL programs offer free online instruction, tutoring, and access to GED preparation courses. Find your local AEL provider at tea.texas.gov/AEL.

GED tests in Texas are administered at Pearson VUE testing centers throughout the state — there are more than 300 locations in Texas, making testing accessible from major cities to rural areas. Each subject test is scheduled and taken separately, so you can test one subject at a time or schedule multiple tests.

How to schedule your Texas GED test:

  1. Create or log in to your myGED account at ged.com
  2. Search for Pearson VUE testing centers near your Texas ZIP code
  3. Select your subject and available test date
  4. Pay the test fee (~$36 per subject) and confirm your appointment

Most Texas test centers offer testing Monday through Saturday, with some Sunday availability at busier locations. Scores are available in myGED within 3–6 hours after testing for most subjects (the RLA extended response/essay takes up to 10 days for human scoring).

Free GED Testing Vouchers in Texas

Some Texas Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program participants may qualify for GED test fee vouchers — essentially free test vouchers that cover some or all of the $36 per-subject fee. Voucher availability depends on your enrollment status in an approved AEL program and available funding. Contact your local AEL provider at tea.texas.gov/AEL to ask about current voucher programs. Community colleges and workforce development centers in Texas also sometimes offer testing fee assistance.
