What is the purpose of a topic sentence in an analytical paragraph?
Answer: To clearly state the main point of the paragraph
A topic sentence introduces the main argument or point of a paragraph. It tells the reader what the paragraph will discuss. A clear topic sentence helps structure analytical writing and signals focus to the examiner.
In 'Romeo and Juliet', what is the effect of Shakespeare's use of oxymorons such as 'loving hate'?
Answer: To convey the contradictory and intense nature of love, passion, and conflict
Shakespeare's oxymorons (e.g., 'loving hate', 'cold fire', 'sick health') in the opening scenes reflect the contradictions Romeo feels: intense love coexisting with pain, and love intertwined with the family feud.
What is the term for the technique of starting a story in the middle of the action?
Answer: In medias res
'In medias res' is Latin for 'in the middle of things'. Starting a story mid-action immediately engages the reader, creates questions, and builds tension before the exposition is given.
What is 'pathetic fallacy'?
Answer: Using the weather or environment to reflect or enhance a character's emotions
Pathetic fallacy is the technique of attributing human emotions to the natural world or weather to mirror or intensify a character's feelings or a scene's atmosphere. For example, a storm during a dramatic confrontation.
What is the difference between a simile and an extended metaphor?
Answer: A simile uses 'like' or 'as' for a brief comparison; an extended metaphor sustains a comparison across several lines or an entire text
A simile is a brief comparison using 'like' or 'as'. An extended metaphor sustains a single comparison throughout a passage, poem, or even an entire text, building layers of meaning.
What is the purpose of the 'context' paragraph in a GCSE literature essay?
Answer: To show understanding of the social, historical, or literary background that influenced the text
Contextual understanding shows how the time period, social conditions, or author's life may have influenced the text. For example, Dickens's poverty in childhood influenced his depiction of the poor in 'A Christmas Carol'.
