  1. A pipe fills a tank in 3 hours, and another pipe empties it in 5 hours. If both are open simultaneously, how long does it take to fill the tank?

    Answer: 7.5 hours

    Net fill rate = 1/3 − 1/5 = 2/15 per hour; time = 15/2 = 7.5 hours.

  2. A salesperson earns a $2,000 base salary plus 5% commission on sales. If she sells $8,000 worth of products, what are her total monthly earnings?

    Answer: $2,400

    Commission = $8,000 × 0.05 = $400; total = $2,000 + $400 = $2,400.

  3. A 10-foot ladder leans against a wall with its base 6 feet from the wall. How high up the wall does the ladder reach?

    Answer: 8 feet

    Using the Pythagorean theorem: height = √(10² − 6²) = √(100 − 36) = √64 = 8 feet.

  4. A store offers a 'buy 2, get 1 free' deal on items costing $15 each. How much does a customer save when buying 6 items?

    Answer: $30

    In 6 items, 2 are free (one free for every 2 purchased), saving 2 × $15 = $30.

  5. A box contains 48 chocolates. If 3/8 of them are dark chocolate, how many are dark chocolate?

    Answer: 18

    48 × 3/8 = 144 ÷ 8 = 18 dark chocolates.

  6. A town's population grows from 20,000 to 23,000 in one year. What is the percentage increase?

    Answer: 15%

    Percentage increase = (3,000 ÷ 20,000) × 100 = 15%.

  7. Two cars start from the same point and drive in opposite directions. Car A travels at 45 mph and Car B at 55 mph. How far apart are they after 3 hours?

    Answer: 300 miles

    Combined speed = 45 + 55 = 100 mph; distance = 100 × 3 = 300 miles.
