What the G7 is and how it works

According to PRINTING United Alliance, “Passing the online exam with 80% proficiency qualifies you for professional certification and inclusion in the PRINTING United Alliance database of certified experts.”^[1]

PRINTING United Alliance sells its color management credentials through the iLearningPlus site. The entry level is Color Management Professional: Fundamentals. The G7+ training and certification course is the advanced level, for people who calibrate presses and proofers using the G7 method. Each one is a self-paced eLearning course followed by an online exam. The G7+ course also has a live training option.

• Fundamentals: $349 for non-members, $279 for members. You need 80% on the online exam to pass.
• G7+ training and certification: $1,699 for non-members, $1,359 for members. You need 90% to pass.
• G7+ upgrade: $849 for non-members, $599 for members. Only people who already hold the earlier G7 credential can take it.

For both Fundamentals and G7+, you get 2 attempts at the final exam. If you fail both, you have to buy the course again. Certification lasts 2 years, and you renew by registering for the certification exam and taking it again. For Fundamentals, renewal has to be finished by the end of the 90-day grace period after your certification expires. The G7+ recertification exam is only for people who hold an active G7+ credential. These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: What does the Neutral Print Density Curve (NPDC) represent?

Explanation:

B is correct. The Neutral Print Density Curve is the target relationship between the input tone value and the neutral density printed for a gray. Question: Which tool is essential for measuring tone value increase (TVI) during process control?

Answer: B. Densitometer

Explanation:

B is correct. Tone value increase (dot gain) is calculated from the optical density of a solid and of a halftone tint. Measuring density is exactly what a densitometer does, which is why it is the standard tool for tracking TVI in process control.

A is not the best answer. Many spectrophotometers can also report density, but the question asks for the tool built for this measurement. Rule to remember: density readings give you TVI, and colorimetric readings give you color.

2. Start with the basics. Work through the color theory practice set and the color measurement set. Make sure you can explain density, tone value increase, gray balance and the NPDC in your own words.
3. Move to calibration. Use the calibration and process control quiz, the ICC profile set and the proofing set. For every question you miss, find the matching lesson in the official eLearning course.
4. Cover production and workflow. Finish with the print production and substrate set and the workflow and quality assurance set.
5. Take the official exam only when you are ready. You get a limited number of attempts, so retake our sets until your weak topics are fixed before you start the real exam.
