What is a 'metes and bounds' legal description?
Answer: A description of land boundaries using bearings, distances, and monuments
Metes and bounds describes land by tracing its boundary using directions (bearings), distances, and natural or artificial monuments.
In PLSS, how is Section 1 of a township located relative to the other sections?
Answer: Northeast corner
Section 1 is always in the northeast corner of a township; numbering proceeds west to Section 6, then drops down and goes east to Section 12, and so on in a boustrophedon pattern.
What is the area of the NW quarter of the SE quarter of a standard PLSS section?
Answer: 40 acres
Each quarter of a 640-acre section = 160 acres; the quarter of a quarter = 40 acres.
What does a 'plat' represent in property surveying?
Answer: A map showing lots, blocks, streets, and easements in a subdivision
A plat is a recorded map of a subdivision showing the division of land into lots and blocks, with all dimensions, easements, and dedications.
The 'principal meridian' in the PLSS is:
Answer: A north-south reference line from which ranges are numbered
Each PLSS survey area is controlled by a principal meridian (north-south) and a baseline (east-west) from which townships and ranges are numbered.
A coordinate inverse from Point A (500 N, 500 E) to Point B (500 N, 800 E) gives an azimuth of:
Answer: 90 degrees (east)
Moving from E=500 to E=800 with no change in northing means the line goes due east, which is an azimuth of 90 degrees.
