Free WYDOT Defensive Driving Techniques Questions and Answers — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What is the "two-second rule" in defensive driving?
- The time it takes to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph
- The minimum safe following distance behind another vehicle (Correct answer)
- The time allowed to change lanes
- The response time to a traffic signal
Correct answer: The minimum safe following distance behind another vehicle
The 'two-second rule' is a common defensive driving guideline for maintaining a minimum safe following distance behind another vehicle. It suggests that a driver should allow at least two seconds to pass between the moment the vehicle in front passes a fixed object and when their own vehicle passes the same object. This provides a basic buffer for reaction time and braking, helping to prevent rear-end collisions in ideal conditions.
Question 2: What is the primary goal of defensive driving?
- To improve driving speed
- To reduce fuel consumption
- To avoid accidents and reduce risks (Correct answer)
- To improve vehicle handling skills
Correct answer: To avoid accidents and reduce risks
The primary goal of defensive driving is to proactively anticipate and avoid potential hazards on the road, thereby preventing accidents and minimizing risks. This involves being constantly aware of your surroundings, anticipating the actions of other drivers, and being prepared to react safely to unexpected situations. By taking a proactive approach, drivers can significantly enhance their safety and the safety of others.
Question 3: When should a driver use the "three-second rule" instead of the "two-second rule"?
- During heavy traffic
- In adverse weather conditions (Correct answer)
- When driving in residential areas
- When following a large vehicle
Correct answer: In adverse weather conditions
The 'three-second rule' is an extension of the 'two-second rule' and is specifically recommended for maintaining a safe following distance in adverse weather conditions, such as rain, snow, ice, or fog. These conditions reduce visibility and significantly increase stopping distances, so a longer following distance provides the extra time and space needed to react safely and prevent collisions, enhancing safety when conditions are poor.
Question 4: How can a driver ensure they are not in another vehicle's blind spot?
- By accelerating past the vehicle
- By driving directly behind the vehicle
- By ensuring they can see the other vehicle's mirrors (Correct answer)
- By honking their horn frequently
Correct answer: By ensuring they can see the other vehicle's mirrors
A common technique to ensure you are not in another vehicle's blind spot is to position your car so that you can clearly see the other vehicle's side mirrors. If you can see their mirrors, it's highly likely they can see you, meaning you are not in their blind spot. This visual cue helps drivers maintain awareness of surrounding traffic and avoid collisions when changing lanes or merging.
Question 5: What should a driver do if they are being tailgated?
- Move to another lane or pull over when safe to let the tailgater pass (Correct answer)
- Brake suddenly to warn the tailgater
- Speed up to increase the distance
- Ignore the tailgater and maintain current speed
Correct answer: Move to another lane or pull over when safe to let the tailgater pass
If you are being tailgated, the safest action is to move to another lane or pull over when it's safe to do so. This defensive driving technique reduces the risk of a rear-end collision and allows the aggressive driver to pass, preventing further unsafe situations. Braking suddenly or speeding up can escalate the danger.
