PRC Breathing Mechanics & Diaphragm Function 1

Question 1

What is the primary muscle responsible for inspiration during quiet breathing?

Accepted Answer

Diaphragm

Answer

The diaphragm is the primary muscle responsible for inspiration, especially during quiet, resting breathing. When it contracts, it flattens and moves downward, increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity. This action creates a pressure gradient that draws air into the lungs, making it crucial for efficient oxygen exchange and core stability.

Question 2

Which structure passes through the diaphragm and allows air flow from the throat to the lungs?

Accepted Answer

Esophagus

Answer

The esophagus is a key anatomical structure that passes through the diaphragm via the esophageal hiatus, connecting the pharynx to the stomach. While its primary role is the transport of food and liquids, not air, it is one of the major structures that anatomically traverses the diaphragm. The trachea, which carries air, is located superior to the diaphragm and does not pass through it.

Question 3

What happens to intrathoracic pressure during diaphragm contraction?

Accepted Answer

It decreases

Answer

During inspiration, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity. According to Boyle's Law, an increase in volume leads to a decrease in pressure. This reduction in intrathoracic pressure creates a gradient, drawing air from the higher atmospheric pressure into the lungs.

Question 4

What is a key sign of dysfunctional breathing mechanics?

Accepted Answer

Use of accessory muscles

Answer

A key sign of dysfunctional breathing mechanics is the excessive use of accessory respiratory muscles in the neck and shoulders (e.g., sternocleidomastoid, scalenes). Healthy breathing primarily relies on the diaphragm, so over-reliance on these accessory muscles indicates inefficient, shallow breathing. This can lead to muscle tension, fatigue, and contribute to postural imbalances.

Question 5

Which nerve innervates the diaphragm?

Accepted Answer

Phrenic nerve

Answer

The phrenic nerve is a crucial nerve that originates from the cervical spinal nerves (C3-C5) and provides motor innervation to the diaphragm. It is essential for controlling the diaphragm's contraction, which is the primary action for inspiration. Damage to the phrenic nerve can severely impair breathing function.
