LMC Lean Principles and Foundations 1

Question 1

Which of the following is NOT one of the five core Lean principles?

Accepted Answer

Pursue Profits

Answer

The five core Lean principles are: Define Value, Map the Value Stream, Create Flow, Establish Pull, and Seek Perfection (or Continuous Improvement). 'Pursue Profits' is a business objective that can result from successful Lean implementation, but it is not one of the foundational principles that guide the methodology itself. Lean focuses on creating value for the customer and eliminating waste, which indirectly leads to profitability.

Question 2

What is the primary goal of Lean Management?

Accepted Answer

Eliminating waste and creating value

Answer

The primary goal of Lean Management is to maximize customer value while minimizing waste. This involves systematically identifying and eliminating non-value-adding activities (muda) from processes, thereby improving efficiency, quality, and responsiveness. By focusing on what truly adds value from the customer's perspective, Lean aims to optimize resource utilization and streamline operations for continuous improvement.

Question 3

Which term refers to any activity that consumes resources but does not add value?

Accepted Answer

Muda

Answer

In Lean methodology, 'Muda' is the Japanese term for waste, referring to any activity or resource consumption that does not add value from the customer's perspective. Identifying and eliminating Muda is a central tenet of Lean, as it directly contributes to inefficiency, increased costs, and reduced quality. Examples include overproduction, waiting, unnecessary motion, and defects, all of which consume resources without creating value.

Question 4

What is 'value' in the context of Lean?

Accepted Answer

Customer-defined benefit

Answer

In the context of Lean, 'value' is fundamentally defined by what the customer is willing to pay for. It represents the specific benefit or feature that meets a customer's need or solves their problem. Any activity or output that does not directly contribute to this customer-perceived benefit is considered waste and targeted for elimination.

Question 5

Which Lean principle involves ensuring that steps in a process are continuous and uninterrupted?

Accepted Answer

Create flow

Answer

The Lean principle of 'Create Flow' focuses on ensuring that work progresses smoothly and continuously through the value stream without interruptions, delays, or bottlenecks. This involves designing processes to minimize waiting times and handoffs, allowing products or services to move from one step to the next seamlessly. By establishing flow, organizations can significantly reduce lead times and improve overall efficiency.
