Question 1

The only physical factor that affects water balance is:

Accepted Answer

temperature

Answer

Temperature is a critical physical factor affecting water balance, particularly in pools and spas, because it directly influences the solubility of minerals like calcium carbonate and the effectiveness of sanitizers. Higher temperatures can lead to increased scaling (calcium precipitation) and accelerate the degradation of disinfectants. This makes it harder to maintain balanced and sanitized water.

Question 2

To be classified as a disinfectant, a compound must kill or inactivate 99.9% of contaminants as well as:

Accepted Answer

leave a measurable residual in the water

Answer

For a compound to be classified as an effective disinfectant in pool and spa water, it must not only kill or inactivate a high percentage of contaminants but also leave a measurable residual. This residual ensures ongoing sanitation throughout the water body, providing continuous protection against new contaminants introduced by swimmers or the environment. This maintains water quality between treatments.

Question 3

Pools using chlorine gas as a disinfectant produce hydrochloric acid, which can be neutralized with:

Accepted Answer

caustic soda or soda ash

Answer

Chlorine gas, when dissolved in water, forms hydrochloric acid, which significantly lowers the water's pH and can cause corrosion and discomfort. To neutralize this acidity and raise the pH back to a safe and balanced range, alkaline chemicals like caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) or soda ash (sodium carbonate) are commonly used. These compounds increase the water's alkalinity, counteracting the acid.

Question 4

A spa with water tested as pH 7.2, temperature 103, calcium hardness 600, total alkalinity 120, and TDS of 1,500 will be:

Accepted Answer

scale forming

Answer

To determine if water is scale-forming, balanced, or corrosive, one typically calculates the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI). With a pH of 7.2, high calcium hardness (600 ppm), and a high temperature (103°F), the water is likely to be oversaturated with calcium carbonate. This combination of factors would result in a positive LSI, indicating scale-forming conditions where calcium deposits can precipitate out of solution.

Question 5

Vacuuming of the pool bottom should be done:

Accepted Answer

after the foreign matter has settled

Answer

Vacuuming the pool bottom is most effective when done after foreign matter, such as dirt, leaves, and debris, has had sufficient time to settle to the bottom. If vacuumed while particles are still suspended, the vacuuming process can stir them up, making it harder to remove them efficiently and potentially recirculating them through the filter system. Allowing settlement ensures thorough cleaning.
