Question 1

What is the function of a transmitter in a broadcast system?

Accepted Answer

Converts signals into RF for broadcasting

Answer

A transmitter is a core component in a broadcast system that takes an audio or video signal (the program material) and converts it into a high-frequency radio frequency (RF) signal. This RF signal is then amplified and sent to an antenna for wireless propagation over the airwaves, enabling the broadcast of content to receivers. It is the device that generates the broadcast signal.

Question 2

Which device combines multiple audio sources into a single output?

Accepted Answer

Audio mixer

Answer

An audio mixer, also known as a mixing console or soundboard, is an electronic device used to combine, route, and adjust the levels and characteristics of multiple audio signals. It allows a broadcast engineer to blend various audio sources, such as microphones, music, and remote feeds, into a balanced and cohesive single output for transmission. This is fundamental for creating a professional broadcast program.

Question 3

What is the role of a modulator in a television system?

Accepted Answer

Encodes signals onto a carrier wave

Answer

In a television system, a modulator is responsible for encoding baseband video and audio signals onto a higher-frequency carrier wave. This process, known as modulation, allows the signals to be efficiently transmitted over the air or through cables, enabling multiple channels to share the same medium without interference. Without modulation, the signals cannot be effectively broadcast.

Question 4

Which component ensures continuous power to a studio during outages?

Accepted Answer

UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

Answer

A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) provides emergency power to critical equipment when the main power source fails. In a broadcast studio, a UPS is vital for ensuring continuous operation of essential systems during brief power outages, preventing interruptions to live broadcasts, and allowing for graceful shutdowns or seamless transitions to backup generators without data loss or equipment damage.

Question 5

What type of cable is typically used to carry high-frequency video signals?

Accepted Answer

Coaxial cable

Answer

Coaxial cable is specifically designed with a central conductor, an insulating layer, a metallic shield, and an outer insulating jacket. This construction makes it highly effective at carrying high-frequency signals, such as video and RF, with minimal signal loss and interference. Its shielding properties are crucial for maintaining signal integrity over longer distances in broadcast applications.
