Free Bachelor of Music: Music Theory Questions and Answers — Questions and Answers
Question 1: According to the time signature, which metric is accurate and complete?
- measure 4
- measure 3
- measure 2
- measure 1 (Correct answer)
Correct answer: measure 1
Assuming the question refers to a visual representation of musical notation, measure 1 is the one that precisely adheres to the rhythmic structure dictated by the given time signature. It contains the exact number and type of note values required to fill the measure completely and accurately, without being over or under-filled.
Question 2: According to the time signature, which metric is accurate and complete?
- measure 4
- measure 3
Question 3: Which measure is accurately notated?
- measure 4
- measure 3
- measure 2 (Correct answer)
- measure 1
Correct answer: measure 2
Assuming the question refers to a visual representation of musical notation, measure 2 is the one that correctly represents the rhythmic values and rests according to the established time signature. It contains the precise duration of notes and rests required to complete the measure without any errors in notation or rhythmic count.
Question 4: Distinguish the given note.
- D#
- F#
- Eb
- C# (Correct answer)
Correct answer: C#
Assuming the note is shown on a musical staff, the given note corresponds to C. The sharp symbol (#) placed before it indicates that the pitch is raised by a semitone. Therefore, the note is correctly identified as C sharp (C#).
Question 5: Distinguish the given note.
- C#
- G#
- F#
- E# (Correct answer)
Correct answer: E#
Assuming the note is shown on a musical staff, the note shown is E. The sharp symbol (#) immediately preceding it indicates that the pitch of E is raised by a semitone. Although enharmonically equivalent to F natural, the correct notation based on the staff position and accidental is E sharp (E#).
Question 6: Determine whether or not the notes are...
- three octaves apart
- two octaves apart (Correct answer)
- one octave apart
- in the same octave
Correct answer: two octaves apart
Assuming the question refers to two notes shown on a musical staff, one note is positioned two full octaves higher or lower than the other. This means there are two complete sets of eight notes (or twelve semitones) separating their pitches. Therefore, the notes are precisely two octaves apart.
Question 7: Which major key's key signature contains two sharps?
Correct answer: D
The order of sharps in a key signature is F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, B#. A key signature with two sharps will always have F# and C#. This specific combination of sharps corresponds to the key of D major.
Question 8: Which major key's key signature consists of three flats?
Correct answer: Eb
The order of flats in a key signature is Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb, Fb. A key signature with three flats will always contain Bb, Eb, and Ab. This specific combination of flats corresponds to the key of E-flat major.
Question 9: Which key signature would work best with this melody?
- 2 flats
- 3 flats
- 4 flats (Correct answer)
- 5 flats
Correct answer: 4 flats
Assuming the question refers to a melody shown in musical notation, to determine the best key signature, one must analyze the accidentals that appear most frequently. A melody that predominantly features B-flat, E-flat, A-flat, and D-flat, and avoids other accidentals, strongly suggests a key signature of four flats (A-flat major or F minor).
Question 10: Determine this scale:
- B major
- B melodic minor
- B harmonic minor (Correct answer)
- B natural minor
Correct answer: B harmonic minor
Assuming the question refers to a scale shown in musical notation, the given scale starts on B and follows the characteristic pattern of a harmonic minor scale. This means it has a raised seventh degree (A# instead of A natural) compared to the natural minor scale, creating the distinctive augmented second interval between the sixth and seventh degrees. This specific structure identifies it as B harmonic minor.
Question 11: Which key signature is most likely to be applied to this scale?
- 4 sharps
- 3 sharps
- 2 sharps (Correct answer)
- 1 sharp
Correct answer: 2 sharps
Assuming the question refers to a scale shown in musical notation, by examining the notes present in the given scale, one can deduce its key. If the scale contains F# and C# as its only consistent accidentals, and follows the pattern of a major or minor scale, then a key signature of two sharps (D major or B minor) is the most appropriate.
Question 12: Find this interval:
- Major 4th
- Perfect 4th
- Major 5th
- Perfect 5th (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Perfect 5th
Assuming the question refers to an interval shown in musical notation, the interval shown consists of two notes that are five scale degrees apart. When measured in semitones, this interval spans seven semitones. This specific distance and quality define it as a perfect fifth, a fundamental consonant interval in Western music theory.
Question 13: Find this interval:
- Major 3rd (Correct answer)
- Minor 3rd
- Diminished 4th
- Perfect 4th
Correct answer: Major 3rd
A Major 3rd interval consists of four half steps. For example, from the note C to E, there are four half steps (C to C#, C# to D, D to D#, D# to E), making it a Major 3rd. This interval is characterized by its bright and consonant sound, often forming the basis of major chords.
Question 14: Choose the correct arpeggiated triad:
- F# augmented
- F# minor (Correct answer)
- F# dominant 7
- F# major
Correct answer: F# minor
An F# minor triad is constructed with the root F#, a minor third above it, and a perfect fifth above the root. This means the notes are F#, A, and C#. The interval from F# to A is a minor third (3 half steps), and from A to C# is a major third (4 half steps), creating the characteristic minor quality.
Question 15: Choose the correct arpeggiated triad:
- G minor
- D minor
- Bb minor
- Bb major (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Bb major
A Bb major triad is built on the root Bb, with a major third above it, and a perfect fifth above the root. The notes in a Bb major triad are Bb, D, and F. The interval from Bb to D is a major third (4 half steps), and from D to F is a minor third (3 half steps), giving it a bright, stable sound.
Question 16: Choose the correct arpeggiated triad:
- Db augmented
- G dimished
- G minor
- Bb minor (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Bb minor
A Bb minor triad is constructed with the root Bb, a minor third above it, and a perfect fifth above the root. This means the notes are Bb, Db, and F. The interval from Bb to Db is a minor third (3 half steps), and from Db to F is a major third (4 half steps), creating the characteristic melancholic minor quality.
