AWS Welding Symbols & Blueprint Reading 1

Question 1

What does the arrow in a welding symbol typically indicate in welding symbols & blueprint reading?

Accepted Answer

Weld location

Answer

In a welding symbol, the arrow points directly to the joint or area where the weld is to be made. It indicates the 'arrow side' of the joint, which is crucial for distinguishing between welds on one side versus the other or both sides of a joint. This ensures the welder places the weld in the correct position as specified by the design.

Question 2

What information is found in the tail of a welding symbol in welding symbols & blueprint reading?

Accepted Answer

Welding process notes

Answer

The tail of a welding symbol is an optional but important component used to convey supplementary information that cannot be expressed directly by other symbols. This often includes specific welding processes, filler metal specifications, post-weld treatments, or other instructions relevant to the welding operation. It acts as a designated space for additional notes or references.

Question 3

In welding symbols & blueprint reading, what does a dashed line beneath a reference line signify?

Accepted Answer

Weld on other side

Answer

In welding symbols, the reference line is the horizontal line. A weld symbol placed on the side of the reference line opposite to the arrow (often depicted as a dashed line or on the 'other side' of the reference line) indicates that the weld should be made on the 'other side' of the joint, opposite to where the arrow points. This convention ensures clarity in weld placement.

Question 4

Which component in blueprint reading is used to represent dimensions?

Accepted Answer

Dimension line

Answer

Dimension lines are used in blueprint reading to indicate the extent and direction of a dimension. They are typically thin lines with arrowheads at each end, placed between extension lines that project from the feature being dimensioned. The numerical value representing the measurement is placed above or within the dimension line, providing precise size information.

Question 5

What does the term 'fillet weld' mean in welding symbols & blueprint reading?

Accepted Answer

Weld at a T-joint

Answer

A fillet weld is a type of weld used to join two pieces of metal that are perpendicular or at an angle to each other, forming a corner, lap, or T-joint. It creates a triangular cross-section and is one of the most common types of welds, particularly for structural applications. This weld type is fundamental in many fabrication processes.
