So I just got my results back and I finally passed the WSI (Water Safety Instructor) certification exam on my second try. Honestly I was pretty discouraged after failing the first time by just 4 points, but I figured I'd share what made the difference in case anyone else is struggling.
The first time around I basically just skimmed the manual and took a couple of quick practice tests the night before. Big mistake. This time I gave myself six weeks, worked through a proper WSI study guide chapter by chapter, and made flashcards for all the developmental stages and teaching progressions. The skills evaluation criteria tripped me up a lot in round one — there's way more nuance there than I expected.
What really helped was drilling with a WSI practice test repeatedly until I was consistently hitting 85%+ before I even booked the exam date. The actual test felt way less stressful once the material was genuinely familiar rather than just sort of recognized. If you're prepping right now, don't underestimate the aquatic readiness and lesson planning sections — those were worth way more points than I expected.
