WLFI inspector exam — moisture content questions tripped me up more than installation defects

Sitting for the WLFI in about 4 weeks and the moisture testing and site assessment sections are giving me more trouble than the installation defect identification content. I've been a flooring installer for 11 years so I know what bad installs look like in the field, but the inspector certification tests the underlying science and measurement standards at a level that goes beyond day-to-day trade knowledge. The moisture-related questions seem to require knowing specific ASTM standards and acceptable variance thresholds by number.

I'm spending about 1.5 hours per day on prep and my practice test scores are hovering around 66–70%. The wood species and grade identification section I'm actually strongest on — probably getting 80%+ there. The laminate wear layer standards and AC rating definitions are things I had to memorize from scratch since laminate isn't my primary area.

The inspection report writing section is something I haven't seen covered much in prep materials. Does the exam actually test report writing or is it more about knowing what findings to look for? I've heard the NWFA standards are the primary reference — is there a condensed version of the NWFA inspection guidelines or do I need to work through the full publication?

ASTM F2170 for in-situ RH testing and F1869 for calcium chloride testing show up by name in the exam questions. Know the acceptable moisture thresholds for both wood and laminate substrates and what conditions require remediation before installation — those specific numbers are tested.

The report writing section tests knowledge of what to document rather than actual writing — it's more like scenario questions about which finding you'd include in an inspection report. Defect causation language is important; inspectors need to describe what they observed without assigning liability beyond the scope of the inspection.

The NWFA guidelines are the core reference and there isn't really a shortcut — you need to know them. That said, the most-tested sections are the installation standards, acclimation requirements, and moisture testing protocols. If you prioritize those chapters you'll cover probably 70% of what shows up on the exam.

With 11 years of install experience you're going to find the defect identification questions much easier than someone coming in from outside the trade. Use that as your point bank and really grind the moisture science and laminate standards specifically. 4 weeks is enough time to close that gap.
