Finally passed my WI DMV knowledge test after failing twice — here's what worked

Okay so I failed the Wisconsin knowledge test twice and was honestly starting to feel embarrassed about it. The first time I barely even studied, figured I'd driven for years so how hard could it be. Second time I read the handbook cover to cover but still blanked on like six questions about road signs I'd never really paid attention to. Third attempt I actually passed with an 88% and I want to share what clicked for me.

The biggest change was using a WI DMV practice test site instead of just reading. Actually answering questions under a little pressure is completely different from passive reading. I also found a solid study guide that broke down the rules-of-the-road sections into smaller chunks instead of the wall-of-text format the official handbook uses. I spent maybe 45 minutes a day for a week and a half.

Anyone else in the same boat? Would love to hear what exam tips worked for others, especially around the road sign section — that tripped me up both times before I really drilled it.

Congrats on passing! I had a similar experience — read the handbook twice and still walked out with a 74 the first time, which is a fail in Wisconsin since you need a 80. What's wild is the questions on the actual test felt more situational than what I expected. Less "what does this sign mean" and more "you're at an intersection and X happens, what do you do." The practice tests I found online were a lot closer to that format than the handbook chapters are.

The road signs section got me too honestly. What helped me was going through practice questions specifically filtered to signs only, doing like 20-30 in a row until I stopped second-guessing myself. The yellow warning signs are sneaky because so many look similar. Once I could tell a "merge" from a "lane ends" at a glance without thinking, that whole section felt way easier. Took about three focused sessions.

88% is a solid score, nice work. I'd tell anyone retaking it: don't skip the alcohol and drug section even if it seems obvious. Those questions showed up more than I expected and some of the wording is deliberately tricky.
