Just passed my WA notary exam — here's what actually helped me

Okay so I've been putting off getting my notary commission in Washington for like two years and finally just buckled down and did it last month. I want to share what worked because I was honestly flying blind at first. The RCW chapters — especially 42.44 and the newer Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts stuff — felt overwhelming when I first opened the state handbook.

What finally clicked for me was finding a solid WA NOTARY practice test online and doing it cold first to see where my gaps were. I scored a 58% on my first try, which was humbling. Spent about 8-10 hours total over two weeks focusing on journal requirements, prohibited acts, and the difference between acknowledgments vs. jurats. Those three areas kept coming up.

I ended up passing with an 87%. The actual exam felt pretty fair — nothing tricky, just straightforward application questions. If you're prepping now, what study guide are you using? Happy to share more specific tips if anyone's studying for the same thing.

Can I ask — did you study the prohibited acts list separately or did it just come up naturally in the practice questions? That's the section I keep blanking on. I'm scheduled for my exam in three weeks and feeling pretty shaky on when a notary can refuse to perform an act versus when refusal is actually required. Any exam tips for that specific topic?

The cold practice test idea is smart. I wasted my first week reading linearly when I should've just taken a diagnostic first. Would've saved me time on stuff I already knew cold.

Congrats! I took mine back in February and the journal requirements questions were no joke — probably 30% of my exam was around that topic alone. I used the Secretary of State's handbook plus a commercial study guide and did maybe 12 hours of prep. The practice tests really do predict the actual difficulty well. Don't skip the electronic notarization section even if you think you won't use it; it showed up for me.
