Finally passed my WA DMV knowledge test after failing twice — here's what worked

Okay so I'm a little embarrassed to admit this but I failed the Washington DMV knowledge test twice before I finally passed last Tuesday. The first time I just showed up thinking I'd wing it (I know, I know). Second time I studied the driver's guide PDF for like two days straight and still got tripped up on the right-of-way questions and school zone speed limits. I was honestly starting to feel like an idiot.

What finally made the difference was using a WA DMV practice test online instead of just reading. I found a site that had question sets that actually matched the format of the real test, and I did probably 4-5 full practice runs over three evenings. My scores went from like 68% to consistently hitting 88-90% before I went back in. The study guide helped for the rules but the practice questions are what drilled it into my memory.

Anyone else struggle with the signs section specifically? I kept mixing up yield vs. warning signs. Happy to share more about my timeline if it helps someone else avoid my mistakes.

Congrats on passing! The practice tests really are the move. I passed first try but I did maybe 200+ practice questions beforehand over about a week. Felt overkill at the time but I got a 92% on the actual test so zero regrets.

The signs section got me too on my first attempt! What helped me was making flashcards specifically for the regulatory vs. warning sign shapes. Red octagon, red triangle, yellow diamond — once I focused on the shapes instead of just memorizing each sign individually it clicked way faster. Also the WA DMV practice test questions repeat a lot of the same sign scenarios so if you do enough of them you'll start recognizing patterns.

Don't feel bad — I work at a driving school and you'd be surprised how many adults retake it. The real test pulls from a bank of like 700+ questions so you can't just memorize a study guide word for word. The exam tips I always give students: slow down on the questions with 'except' or 'unless' in them, those are the ones people rush through and get wrong. Also Washington is strict about HOV lane rules, make sure you know the occupancy requirements.
