Finally passed VEPT after two attempts — here's what actually helped

Okay so I've been lurking here for a while and wanted to share my experience because I couldn't find much when I was searching. I work as a vet tech in a small practice in Ohio and my clinic started requiring the VEPT for all staff this year. Failed my first attempt back in February — scored a 71 when I needed a 75 — and I was honestly devastated. Pharmacology and anesthetic monitoring killed me.

For round two I completely changed my approach. Found a solid VEPT practice test online and drilled it every night for about six weeks. The practice questions exposed gaps I didn't even know I had, especially around fluid therapy calculations and controlled substance protocols. I also grabbed a study guide that broke down each domain by weight, which helped me prioritize instead of reviewing everything equally.

Passed with an 82 last week. Biggest exam tips I'd give: don't underestimate the surgical nursing section, and time yourself on practice sets because the real thing moves fast. Happy to answer questions if anyone's prepping right now.

Congrats! I'm scheduled for mine in July and the pharmacology section is exactly what's scaring me too. Did you find the practice test questions were close to the actual difficulty level? I've been using two different resources and they feel pretty different from each other. Also — 6 weeks of nightly studying, how many hours per session roughly?

An 82 is a great score, especially after coming back from a near-miss. The controlled substance protocols section is no joke — regs vary by state so make sure whatever study guide you're using is current. Good luck to everyone else prepping!

The fluid therapy calculations tripped me up on my first attempt as well. What worked for me was writing out the formulas by hand every single day until they were automatic. Sounds tedious but by test day I didn't even have to think. Also the anesthesia monitoring stuff is heavier than the domain percentages suggest — at least it felt that way for me.
