Finally passed my Virginia notary exam after failing twice — here's what worked

Okay so I'm not proud of this but I failed the Virginia notary certification exam twice before I finally passed last month. The first time I went in completely cold thinking it would be easy — I mean, how hard can notary stuff be, right? Wrong. There's a lot of specific Virginia state law in there that tripped me up, especially around acknowledgments vs. jurats and the rules about who you can and can't notarize for.

What actually turned things around for me was finding a decent VA NOTARY practice test that mirrored the real question format. I did timed runs every night for two weeks straight. Combined with a study guide that broke down the Virginia Notary Public Act section by section, I finally felt like I understood the WHY behind the rules, not just memorizing answers.

For anyone else prepping right now — what are you using to study? Specifically curious if anyone has good exam tips for the conflict of interest questions because those still feel fuzzy to me even after passing.

I'm currently studying for mine and honestly the VA NOTARY study guide from the Secretary of State's office is free and actually pretty solid as a baseline. But I've been supplementing with practice questions because reading the law versus applying it in question form are totally different skills. Does anyone know how many questions are on the actual exam? I've seen different numbers floating around online.

Congrats on passing! I went through the same thing last year. The conflict of interest questions are honestly some of the trickiest ones on there. The key I found is to remember it's not just about financial interest — familial relationships count too, even cousins. Virginia's definition is broader than most people expect. That tripped me up on my first attempt.

The real exam is 30 questions and you need a 70 to pass. Don't sleep on the electronic notarization section — it's newer content and shows up more than you'd think. Spent maybe 12 hours total studying and passed with an 83.
