So I just got my results back and I finally passed the UTC exam on my third attempt. I'm not going to sugarcoat it — this test is harder than I expected going in, especially the refrigerant recovery and EPA Section 608 overlap questions. My first two attempts I was scoring in the low 60s, which wasn't enough to pass.
What finally made the difference was committing to a structured UTC practice test routine instead of just skimming the material. I was doing 20-30 questions a day for about three weeks, focusing on the domains where I kept losing points — mostly HVACR safety procedures and Type I/II/III refrigerant handling. I also found a solid UTC study guide that broke down the four exam sections individually rather than trying to cram everything at once.
For anyone currently prepping, my biggest exam tips would be: don't underestimate the electrical theory section, know your pressure-temperature charts cold, and time yourself on practice sets because the real exam moves faster than you think. Happy to answer questions if anyone's in the same boat I was.
