Finally passed the Utah notary exam after failing twice — here's what worked

So I'm a little embarrassed to admit I failed the Utah notary exam twice before finally passing last month. I kept underestimating it honestly — I figured notary certification couldn't be that hard, right? Wrong. The second time I failed I missed passing by two questions and I was genuinely frustrated. I work at a title company and my manager has been waiting on me to get certified for almost four months now.

What finally made the difference was actually sitting down with a proper UT NOTARY study guide instead of just skimming the state handbook. I spent about two weeks going through the official Utah Notary Public Study Guide section by section, then I found a UT NOTARY practice test that covered the acknowledgment vs. jurat distinction, which I kept mixing up. That topic alone probably accounts for 4-5 questions on the real exam.

If anyone else is studying for this, focus hard on the prohibited acts section and the journal requirements — those showed up way more than I expected. Happy to share more exam tips if anyone's struggling like I was.

The acknowledgment vs. jurat thing got me too on my first attempt. What helped me was just writing out the difference by hand like five times until it clicked — an acknowledgment is about identity, a jurat is about oath. Also don't sleep on the notarial certificate wording requirements. The Utah-specific certificate language tripped up a couple people in my notary prep class. Good on you for sticking with it.

I'm currently studying for mine and honestly feeling a little nervous reading this. I've been using the state handbook but maybe that's not enough? How many questions is the actual exam and what's the passing score? I've seen different numbers floating around online and I can't figure out which is current. Also did you take it in person at the county clerk's office or through an online proctored thing?

Congrats! The journal requirements are no joke — Utah is stricter than most states about what has to be recorded for each notarization. Two weeks of focused study sounds about right. I passed on my first try but I put in probably 10-12 hours total, didn't rush it.
