Finally passed my USCG exam after three attempts — here's what worked

I'm not gonna sugarcoat it — the USCG licensing exam humbled me twice before I finally passed last month. First attempt I went in after two weeks of casual reading and scored a 68, needed a 70. Second time I studied harder but still hit 69. I was pretty demoralized at that point, honestly considered just giving up on the captain's license altogether.

What finally clicked was switching up my approach completely. Instead of reading the study guide cover to cover, I started drilling questions daily — found a solid USCG practice test that actually mirrors the real format, and I did timed sessions every morning before work. The rules of the road section killed me on both previous attempts, so I made flashcards specifically for light patterns and sound signals.

Ended up scoring an 82 on my third try. Happy to share my study schedule or talk through the specific topics that tripped me up. Anyone else here studying for USCG right now?

Congrats on finally getting through it! The rules of the road section is brutal, you're definitely not alone there. I passed on my second attempt and what helped me most was timing myself strictly — the real exam paces you fast and I kept running out of time in practice. Also, don't skip the chart plotting questions even if they feel tedious. They showed up way more than I expected.

Which practice test resource did you use? I've been using a couple different ones and getting inconsistent results — some seem way harder than the actual exam material, others feel too easy. I'm about six weeks out from my exam date and still hovering around 71-73 on practice runs. My exam tips from a buddy were mostly focused on navigation rules but I feel weak on the meteorology stuff too.

82 on the third attempt is legit, don't let anyone downplay that. The USCG exam is no joke. Stick to the official reference materials for the last two weeks and stop introducing new study guides — you want your brain locked into one framework by test day.
