Struggling with USABO prep — what actually worked for you?

So I just got my school's approval to compete in USABO this year and I'm kind of freaking out. I've been doing AP Bio but honestly the gap between AP and USABO feels massive. Like, I opened a past Open Exam and couldn't answer half the questions on cell signaling and plant physiology. My goal is to at least make it past the Open round.

I've been hunting for a good USABO practice test resource but most of what I find online is either outdated or just the official past exams with no explanations. Has anyone found a study guide that actually breaks down the Semifinal-level material? I've heard Campbell Biology is essential but I don't know which chapters to prioritize with only about 14 weeks until the Open Exam in February.

Would love to hear from people who've gone through this — what was your weekly study schedule like, and are there any exam tips that actually made a difference? Specific resources, topic priorities, anything helps.

Honestly the best exam tips I got were from people who'd already taken the Semifinal — they said the Open feels easy in comparison but it's a trap because the time pressure is real. I'd recommend doing every past Open Exam timed. Also, don't sleep on genetics and Mendelian problems, they show up every single year and you can basically guarantee those points. What's your strongest area right now? That'll change how you should allocate your weeks.

Campbell is non-negotiable but don't try to read it cover to cover — that's a trap. I focused on chapters 5-12 (biochem/cell bio), 48-50 (neurons/hormones), and all of unit 8 (ecology). Spent about 2 hours a day for 12 weeks and scored in the top 200 for the Open. Blamire's Biology pages are also underrated for quick concept checks. The Open is mostly recall and application, not crazy derivations.

Two things that actually moved the needle for me: flashcards for all the metabolic pathways (glycolysis, Calvin cycle, nitrogen fixation — know them cold), and finding a study partner. Testing each other out loud exposed gaps way faster than re-reading ever did. Good luck, the Open is very doable with consistent prep.
