Finally passed my TX DMV knowledge test after failing twice — here's what worked

Okay so I failed the Texas DMV written test twice in a row and honestly wanted to give up. First time I only got a 62 and you need a 70 to pass. Second time I scored a 68, which was just embarrassing. I had been skimming through the Texas Driver Handbook and figured that would be enough — it really isn't.

What finally clicked for me was actually doing a TX DMV practice test over and over until I was consistently hitting 85-90%. The real questions on the exam are worded really similarly to the practice ones, especially the road signs section and right-of-way scenarios. I spent about 4-5 days studying for maybe 45 minutes each session. The TX DMV study guide helped me focus on speed limits in school zones and highway driving rules, which showed up a LOT on my actual test.

Passed with an 82 on my third attempt this past Tuesday. If anyone's struggling, just keep drilling those practice questions. Anyone else have topics they found tricky that I should know about for when my spouse takes theirs next month?

Congrats! Road signs were my biggest hurdle too. I failed once before I started treating the practice tests seriously. One thing that helped me — don't just click through the answers, actually read the explanation for every wrong answer. I went from a 64 to passing with a 76 in about a week. The school zone and construction zone speed limits tripped me up way more than I expected.

For your spouse — make sure they really study the alcohol and DUI laws section. That part caught me off guard because it's not just about blood alcohol limits, there are questions about open container rules and implied consent that felt almost like a law exam. I think I got 3-4 questions just on that topic. The TX DMV study guide covers it but you gotta actually memorize the specifics, not just skim.

Third time's the charm! Seriously though, 45 minutes a day for less than a week is totally doable. Wish I had found good practice tests before I walked in cold the first time. Your spouse will be fine if they put in even that little bit of prep time.
