Failed TOWES twice — what actually helped you pass this thing?

I've been working in industrial maintenance for about six years and my employer is now requiring TOWES certification for a promotion I've been waiting on. I took it twice already and both times I got tripped up on the document use section — the graphs and tables kill me. I scored around 2 on numeracy both attempts when I need at least a 3 to qualify.

I started going through a TOWES practice test I found online and honestly it's the first time I've seen questions that actually feel close to the real thing. The reading passages are dense and the time pressure is no joke. Has anyone used a structured study guide that helped them get comfortable with the workplace document format specifically? I'm not a bad reader but the format throws me off.

I'm giving myself eight weeks before I book attempt three. Any tips on what to prioritize — especially for the numeracy and document use sections? Would really appreciate hearing from people who've been through this.

Don't skip the numeracy fractions and percentages review even if you feel okay with basic math. That section is trickier than it looks because the numbers are embedded in workplace scenarios. Good luck on attempt three — sounds like you're putting in the right work this time.

Eight weeks is plenty of time if you're consistent. One thing nobody tells you — the reading passages aren't testing whether you understand the topic, they're testing whether you can find specific information fast. I started skimming for keywords instead of reading top to bottom and my speed improved a lot. Also, exam tips I kept seeing mentioned practicing under actual time constraints, not just doing questions casually. That part matters more than people think.

The document use section got me too on my first attempt. What clicked for me was practicing with actual workplace forms — safety logs, shipping manifests, that kind of stuff. I spent about 45 minutes a day for six weeks just reading tables out loud and identifying what each column was actually asking. Went from a level 2 to a 3B. The TOWES study guide from my local employment centre also had some decent timed exercises.
