How long does it actually take to prepare for the TKT?

So I've been going back and forth on whether to sit the TKT this autumn and I honestly can't figure out how much time I need to set aside. I'm a native English speaker working at a language school, but I have zero formal teaching qualifications — my grammar terminology is honestly embarrassing. Like, I had to Google what a "ditransitive verb" was last week. Not great.

I've seen people say anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months of prep, which is a huge range. I'm also a bit confused about the tkt cost — the Cambridge site lists fees but then my local test centre quoted me something different, so I'm not sure if there are admin fees on top. Has anyone navigated that recently?

I started working through the TKT Practice Test (Module 1 Unit 1 Grammatical Terms) this week and it was a real wake-up call. Some of the metalanguage questions genuinely stumped me. Would love to hear realistic timelines from people who've actually sat it, especially if you came in with a similar background.

The CLIL module caught me off guard — way more specialised than I expected. If you're planning to do that one too, check out the TKT Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) 2 practice material separately. Treat it as its own beast rather than an extension of the core modules.

Honestly, 8-10 weeks of consistent study was enough for me and I was in a similar boat — native speaker, no linguistics background. I did about an hour a day on weekdays and longer sessions on weekends. The terminology side is the steepest learning curve but it clicks fast once you start seeing patterns. I scored band 3 on all three modules on my first attempt, which I was pretty happy with. Don't overthink the prep time, just be consistent.

On the cost question — yes, there are usually centre administration fees on top of the Cambridge registration fee, so always call ahead. I paid about £130 total per module when I sat mine in the UK, but I've heard it varies a lot internationally. Also worth knowing you can do tkt online through some approved centres now, which might open up cheaper options depending on where you are. The online format felt pretty much the same as the paper version to me.
