Finally passed my TEFL after three attempts — here's what actually worked

Okay so I've been lurking here for a while and wanted to share my experience because I wish someone had told me this stuff before I started. I'm a 29-year-old who decided to pivot out of marketing and teach English abroad, and the TEFL certification process honestly humbled me more than I expected. My first two attempts I was just reading through the course materials and thinking that was enough. Spoiler: it wasn't.

What finally clicked for me was treating it like an actual exam rather than a course completion. I started using a TEFL practice test religiously — like two timed sessions per week for the last six weeks before my retake. The grammar sections especially, because I speak English fluently but couldn't explain why something was wrong, which is exactly what they test. I also found a solid study guide that broke down lesson planning theory and phonology together, which helped connect concepts I'd been treating separately.

My score jumped from 68% to 84% on the final attempt. Anyone else here prepping right now? Happy to share what study materials I actually used if it helps.

Can I ask which practice tests you were using? I'm about three weeks out from my exam and I've been going through my course provider's built-in quizzes but they feel way too easy compared to what people describe on the actual test. I'm targeting around 80% minimum because I want to apply to programs in South Korea that have higher score requirements. Also — how long did you study per day in those final six weeks?

This is so relatable it hurts. I failed mine the first time because I completely underestimated the phonology and error correction sections. Honestly the best exam tip I got was to stop just memorizing terminology and start applying it — like actually try to write out sample lesson plans even if nobody grades them. That practice made the methodology questions way less abstract. Congrats on the 84%, that's a solid score.

Three attempts takes real persistence — respect for sticking with it. The grammar explanation piece trips up so many native speakers. Being fluent and being able to teach are completely different skills and the exam really does test that gap. Good luck with the job search!
