Failed the TASC writing section twice, what am I missing?

So I've been trying to get my TASC done for almost a year now and the writing section is killing me. I passed math (barely, scored a 510) and science no problem, but writing just isn't clicking. My essay scores keep coming back lower than I expect — I feel like I'm making solid points but the graders seem to want something specific that I'm not doing.

I work full time at a warehouse so I can only study about an hour a night, maybe two on weekends. I've been using some YouTube videos and a few free sites but nothing feels targeted enough. Someone in a Facebook group mentioned the TASC performance breakdown matters more than just overall score — like you need a 2 on the essay component specifically? Can anyone confirm that?

I'm also confused about the extended response vs. the multiple choice grammar questions. Is one worth more than the other? I tried the TASC Writing Practice Quiz 1 on here and it helped me see some grammar gaps, but I'd really appreciate advice from people who've actually been through this.

The essay score requirement is real — you need at least a 2 out of 4 on the extended response or you automatically fail the writing subtest even if your multiple choice score is decent. That tripped me up the first time too. Focus on having a clear thesis, use evidence from the passage they give you (don't just argue from personal opinion), and structure it with an intro, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Graders move fast, so clarity matters way more than fancy vocabulary.

Honestly the grammar/mechanics portion saved me. I was terrible at essays in school so I doubled down on the multiple choice side — comma rules, subject-verb agreement, sentence structure. That section is like 65% of your writing score so if you can nail it you have some cushion on the essay. I scored a 3 on the essay and still passed comfortably. TASC performance on writing is really about not bombing either piece, you know?

Try the other practice quizzes on this site too — TASC Writing Practice Quiz 2 and TASC Writing Practice Quiz 3 cover different grammar rules. I went through all three the week before my test and noticed patterns in what kept showing up. You've got this, one hour a night consistently adds up faster than you think.
