Finally passed STAR exam after failing twice — here's what actually worked

Okay so I've been lurking here for months and I figure I owe it to this community to share my experience. Failed the STAR exam in October and again in January — both times by like 4-5 points. I was so frustrated because I genuinely thought I understood the material. Turns out I was studying the wrong way, not the wrong content.

What finally clicked for me was ditching the textbook-only approach and actually drilling with a STAR practice test under timed conditions. I'd been reading chapters and thinking I knew it, but the moment I had a clock running I'd second-guess everything. Once I started treating my study sessions like the real thing, my scores jumped. I also found a solid STAR study guide that broke down the scoring rubric — understanding how points are allocated changed how I prioritized topics.

A few exam tips that genuinely helped: don't skip the scenario-based questions when practicing, they show up constantly on the real thing. Also give yourself at least 6 weeks if you're working full-time. I tried to cram it into 3 weeks both times I failed. Anyone else retaking or prepping right now? Happy to answer questions.

This is so relatable, I failed my first attempt too and felt completely blindsided. The scenario questions are no joke. I ended up doing about 45 minutes of practice daily for six weeks straight and that consistency made a huge difference. Also made sure I reviewed every wrong answer instead of just moving on — that's where the real learning happened for me. Congrats on passing!

The timed practice thing is huge. I volunteer as a proctor and you'd be shocked how many people clearly know the material but freeze when the clock is running. Simulate the real environment as much as possible — same time of day, no phone nearby. Builds the right muscle memory.

Quick question — which study guide did you end up using? There are like four or five floating around and I can't figure out which ones are actually worth the money vs. just rephrased material from the official handbook. I'm about 3 weeks out from my test date and starting to panic a little. I feel decent on the technical stuff but the situational judgment sections are tripping me up.
