Finally passed my SPED certification after failing twice — here's what worked

I've been a paraprofessional for three years and kept putting off getting my SPED certification because honestly the thought of that exam terrified me. Failed it the first time with a 68 (needed a 75) and the second time with a 72. I was starting to think maybe it just wasn't for me.

What finally clicked was actually slowing down and working through a structured SPED practice test instead of just rereading my notes. I found that timed practice under real conditions exposed gaps I didn't even know I had — especially around IEP legal requirements and the difference between accommodations vs. modifications. Those two areas alone probably make up a solid chunk of the test.

I also leaned hard on a decent study guide that broke down IDEA regulations in plain language rather than the dense textbook version. Took me about six weeks of consistent study, maybe 8-10 hours a week. Passed with an 81 on my third attempt. If you're in the same boat, happy to share more specific exam tips — just ask below.

Congratulations, that third attempt must've felt amazing! I'm about four weeks out from my first attempt and the IEP stuff is killing me too. Do you remember if the test heavily focuses on specific disability categories or more on the general instructional strategies side? I've been splitting my time 50/50 but wondering if I should rebalance.

Six weeks at 8-10 hours a week is pretty much exactly what I did too. Don't try to cram it into two weeks — this isn't that kind of test. The legal stuff needs time to actually stick.

I passed mine last fall and the accommodations vs. modifications distinction absolutely showed up multiple times — you're right to flag that. One thing that helped me was making a two-column comparison chart and just drilling it until it was automatic. Also the eligibility process steps, like the specific timeline requirements after a referral. That came up way more than I expected.
