SnowPro Core exam — how hands-on is the study approach?

I'm preparing for the SnowPro Core Certification and I work as a data engineer but I'm relatively new to Snowflake specifically — about 8 months of daily use. I'm trying to figure out whether this exam rewards hands-on experience or whether deep study of the documentation is sufficient.

Topics like micro-partitioning, clustering keys, and the query optimization concepts I get from daily work but the security architecture, data sharing features, and Snowpark are less familiar since I haven't used them heavily in production.

I've been using the official Snowflake study guide and doing hands-on labs in a trial account. Currently scoring around 72% on practice tests and the pass mark is 75%.

Any tips on the specific areas where people tend to drop points unexpectedly?

Snowpark came up on mine but not heavily — maybe 5-6 questions. The security model and role hierarchy was more prominent: RBAC, object-level privileges, and how column-level security interacts with masking policies.

I'd say hands-on experience is what separates candidates who score 78+ from those who scrape 75. Reading docs gives you the words, but labs give you the mental models that help with tricky scenario questions.

Time travel and fail-safe are tested at the specific parameter level. Know the retention period defaults and maximum values for each edition, and what operations are NOT covered by time travel. That section has cost people points who thought they knew it.

I went from 71% to 80% by doing 2-3 hours of focused hands-on labs daily for the last 2 weeks rather than more reading. The platform just makes sense once you've actually used every feature.

Data sharing was a surprise for me — reader accounts, secure data sharing, data marketplace — the questions on those features went deeper than I expected from just reading docs. Actually set up a data share in your trial account and walk through it.

Virtual warehouse sizing and credit consumption is tested specifically. Know the relationship between warehouse size, credit usage per hour, and query concurrency — the numbers matter.
