I work full time (43 hours a week) and just registered for the SELT. I'm trying to set a realistic study timeline before committing to a test date.
From what I've read online, estimates range from 4 weeks to 14 weeks depending on background. My background is related but I've never taken a formal selt nh course, so I'm probably starting from an intermediate level.
I've been using the selt - skills for english understanding vocabulary in context questions and answers to gauge where I stand, and my initial diagnostic scores are around 68% — which tells me I have work to do.
For those who've been through it: did you study daily or more intensively in bursts? And did you feel like your practice scores accurately predicted your real exam performance? Any input would help me set a realistic target date.
Bookmarking this. I'm still in the early stages of SELT prep and threads like this are way more useful than generic study guides. The specifics about selt nh are particularly helpful — that's the section I've been avoiding.
This is exactly the thread I needed. I sit for my SELT in 2 weeks and have been second-guessing my prep. The selt nh area you mentioned is definitely my weak spot. Thanks for the honest breakdown.
For what it's worth — I've taken the SELT twice now. First attempt I underestimated the selt nh questions. Second time I focused almost exclusively on applied practice and passed comfortably. The difference is real.
Really helpful breakdown, thanks for sharing. I'm at week 4 of my SELT prep and the selt section is exactly where I'm struggling too. Going to try the approach you described and see if it moves my scores.
