Applying for a California security guard registration through BSIS. The application requires passing a 40-question exam. I've worked in retail loss prevention for 2 years but never had a formal guard card or taken the state exam. What does the test actually cover and how hard is it to pass?

Powers of arrest and use of force limitations are the most heavily tested and also where most people who fail get tripped up. Know the citizen's arrest rules in California specifically — they're different from what TV shows.

The BSIS test covers: legal powers of arrest, emergency procedures, observation and report writing, public relations, and access control basics. It's 40 questions with 70% passing score. Straightforward if you study the BSIS study guide.

The 8-hour powers of arrest training is required before the exam. If you take it seriously rather than just checking the box, the exam content will feel familiar since the training directly maps to the exam topics.
