Freelance translator (English/German/French) considering getting the SDL Trados Studio certification. Most of my clients already expect me to have Trados experience and I do, but no formal certification. Agency clients seem to assume I know it, direct clients don't care. Is there a business case for getting formally certified?

The certification helped me win one enterprise agency contract where they had a checklist requirement for tool certification. Outside that specific situation, no direct client has ever asked about it. It's a narrow but real business case.

If you're going to do it, Trados Live Premium subscription includes the certification materials at a reasonable bundle price. Do it when you're renewing your software subscription anyway.

The value is mostly internal — going through the certification process taught me features of Trados I was using suboptimally. The actual learning was worth more than the credential itself.
