SD DMV knowledge test tips — passed on my first try at 92%

Just passed the South Dakota written exam this morning and wanted to share what worked since I spent way too long searching for good prep advice before taking it. I'm 19 and this was my first driver's license, so I was nervous going in with no prior experience to fall back on.

I studied for about three weeks total, roughly 40 minutes per session. The first week I read the South Dakota Driver License Manual cover to cover, then spent weeks two and three doing a SD DMV practice test every day and reviewing whatever I got wrong. By the end I was consistently hitting 88–94% on practice rounds, which matched almost exactly what I scored on the real thing.

The actual test had a lot of questions about open range laws and livestock on roadways — that's South Dakota specific and the manual dedicates only like two paragraphs to it, so make sure you know it cold. Also expect questions on BAC limits and implied consent, probably 4–5 of them.

You get 25 questions and need 20 correct (80%). Don't rush through it; I finished in about 12 minutes and had time to review three answers I wasn't sure about. Changed one and it was the right call.

I'd also recommend doing at least one full timed practice session the night before. It gets rid of the anxiety about running out of time, which is honestly the biggest thing that messes people up on test day.

The open range question is no joke — I failed my first attempt because I had no idea what 'open range' even meant. Once I looked it up it's simple: livestock have right of way on unfenced roads. Wish the manual made that clearer upfront.

For anyone in Sioux Falls — the downtown DMV office is way less crowded if you go on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning. I walked in without an appointment and was done in 25 minutes total including the test.

92% first try is impressive. I got 84% and was happy with it. The night driving rules section surprised me, especially the question about when you're required to dim your high beams for oncoming traffic. 500 feet is the answer and I almost got it wrong.

I actually failed my first attempt, which was embarrassing. I'd only skimmed the handbook and figured I knew enough from riding with my parents, but the sign questions and right-of-way scenarios completely wrecked me. What changed the second time was drilling actual practice questions instead of just reading. I found these free sd dmv driver licensing questions and just hammered them until the wrong answers stopped tripping me up.

Honestly that's it. I didn't do anything fancy, just repeated the practice tests until I was consistently hitting 90%+ before I rescheduled. The real test felt way less scary because I'd already seen most of the question formats. Don't make my mistake and walk in after just reading the manual once, it's not enough.
